Torres discovers an unfinished holodeck programme in which the Maquis crew mutiny against Janeway, and it quickly becomes the most popular entertainment on the ship. Everyone wants to know how it ends. The author turns out to be Tuvok, who wrote it in the early days as a security training exercise in case of a real Maquis uprising, then abandoned it once the crews came together. Paris persuades him to co-write an ending, but when they start work they find someone else has altered the programme: Seska, who discovered it before she defected. Her holographic double traps them with the safeties off, and her changes threaten the ship. Janeway and Torres try to rewrite the story from outside, buying time with twists such as a surprise alien attack. Finally Tuvok gives Seska a phaser rifle he has rigged to fail, and when she fires, it destroys her. Afterwards Tuvok and Paris consider writing together again.
