A timeship from the 29th century, the Aeon, attacks Voyager. Its captain, Braxton, claims Voyager will cause an explosion that destroys Earth's solar system, and in the struggle both ships fall into a temporal rift. Voyager emerges in orbit of Earth in 1996. Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok and Paris beam down to Los Angeles. They find Braxton living on the streets: he crashed in 1967, where a young Henry Starling found the Aeon and used its technology to build his computer giant, Chronowerx. Now Starling plans to fly the timeship into the future, which Braxton believes will cause the catastrophe. Young astronomer Rain Robinson, who has spotted Voyager, becomes a target for Starling's assassin, and Paris and Tuvok race to protect her. When Starling confronts the officers, he uses their transport to break into Voyager's computer, stealing data and the Doctor. Part I ends as Voyager descends into the atmosphere and is caught on camera.
