Neelix starts a cheerful daily news broadcast for the crew, but his upbeat plans are overtaken when Tom Paris, after weeks of erratic and insubordinate behaviour, leaves Voyager to join a Talaxian convoy. Soon afterwards Seska and the Kazon-Nistrim seize Paris from the convoy. Turning investigative reporter, Neelix finds evidence that someone aboard is passing information to the Kazon. The truth is that Paris's bad conduct and departure were an elaborate cover, devised with Janeway and Tuvok to expose the informant, and even Chakotay was kept in the dark. Aboard the Kazon ship Paris learns that the spy is engineer Michael Jonas. Neelix, following the same trail, is caught by Jonas in engineering as he tries to trap Voyager for the Kazon. In the struggle Jonas falls from a walkway and is killed in a plasma stream. Paris damages the Kazon ship, escapes in a stolen shuttle and returns home.

  2. 02Working titles included “Untitled Neelix Newspaper” and “The Right to Know”. The story was first told only through Neelix's eyes, until Paramount asked to see Paris's escape.
  3. 03The only second-season episode to premiere on a Wednesday rather than a Monday. It is also Michael Jonas's final appearance.
