Voyager answers a distress call and beams aboard Dr Danara Pel, a Vidiian close to death from the phage. To save her, the Doctor transfers her consciousness into a healthy holographic body while he treats her ravaged physical one. Working side by side, the two physicians grow close, and the Doctor, nudged along by Kes and Paris, finds himself in his first romance. Danara's recovery depends on brain tissue from Torres, whose Klingon DNA resists the phage. Torres, still haunted by her own capture by the Vidiians, refuses at first, but agrees after meeting Danara. Then Danara, dreading a return to her scarred body, secretly sabotages her own treatment. The Doctor persuades her that her appearance does not matter to him, and the procedure goes ahead. Restored to her own body, she meets the Doctor at Sandrine's, where they dance. Meanwhile, Tom Paris grows increasingly insubordinate, a pattern that ends with him in the brig.
