On a planet ruled by the oppressive Mokra, an away team trying to obtain a chemical Voyager badly needs is ambushed. Tuvok and Torres are captured and imprisoned, and Augris, the Mokra commander, interrogates them as suspected members of the resistance. An injured Janeway is rescued by Caylem, a gentle but troubled Alsaurian who believes she is his daughter. He has spent years planning to free his wife from the Mokra prison, and Janeway plays along with his delusion as he helps her slip into the city. Together they break into the prison caves to free her officers, but they are recaptured. Augris then reveals the truth: Caylem's wife died long ago, and his daughter was killed twelve years earlier during one of his rescue attempts. In the struggle that follows, Caylem stabs Augris to protect Janeway but is fatally shot. Janeway comforts him in his last moments and is left holding his daughter's necklace.
