Voyager investigates what appears to be a Federation signal, only to fall into a Kazon trap laid by Seska. In a daring raid, the Kazon-Nistrim board the ship and steal a transporter module, a prize that could shift the balance of power among the Kazon sects. Chakotay, who blames himself for trusting Seska when she served in his Maquis cell, takes a shuttle without orders and pursues Maje Culluh's ship alone. He succeeds in destroying the stolen technology but is captured, and Culluh tries to impress the leaders of other sects by claiming to have extracted Voyager's command codes from him. Janeway answers with a gambit of her own: Voyager beams the visiting Kazon majes aboard and holds them at phaser point until Chakotay and his shuttle are released. Back aboard, Janeway acknowledges his intentions but formally reprimands him for disobeying orders. Seska, meanwhile, reveals that she has used Chakotay's DNA to conceive a child.
