The crew gather in the holodeck's Chez Sandrine to celebrate Kes's second birthday when Voyager is caught by a strange ring of energy. As it closes around the ship, corridors and rooms begin to shift, internal communications fail and crew members find themselves walking in circles, unable to reach the bridge, engineering or sickbay. The Doctor, stranded away from sickbay, has to fend off the attentions of the holographic Sandrine. Janeway is left delirious after touching the anomaly, and Neelix's jealousy over Paris and Kes flares up again. Torres and Paris try to disrupt the field with an energy burst, but it only speeds up the distortion. With nothing else left to try, Tuvok argues that the logical course is to do nothing at all. The field passes over them harmlessly and the ship returns to normal. Janeway then finds that a huge quantity of data has been transferred into the computer, perhaps an attempt at contact.
