Chakotay takes a shuttle out alone to perform the pakra, a ritual honouring his late father, and strays into space held by the Kazon-Ogla. A young Kazon, Kar, attacks him in an attempt to earn his warrior name. Chakotay destroys Kar's ship but rescues him, which only shames the youth: by saving Kar, Chakotay has denied him his chance at a name, an offence punishable by death. Taken prisoner by the Kazon leader Razik, and with both their lives in danger, Chakotay seizes Razik as a hostage and escapes with Kar to a nearby moon, where the two must survive together. When the Kazon arrive, Chakotay poses as Kar's prisoner. Kar shoots Razik instead of Chakotay, earning the name Jal Karden and taking Razik's place as leader. Voyager departs safely, though Karden vows to kill Chakotay if they meet again. Back aboard, Chakotay completes his ritual and prays for the young man's wellbeing.
