Voyager meets the Sikarians, a hospitable people devoted to pleasure, who invite the crew to their world for shore leave. Hopes soar when Harry Kim and a Sikarian are sent 40,000 light years in an instant by the trajector, a Sikarian device that could bring Voyager decades closer to home. Janeway asks for the technology, but the magistrate Gath refuses, citing Sikarian law against sharing technology, and seems to string her along. When negotiations fail, some of the crew look for another way, and Tuvok himself illegally obtains the trajector. Torres and Seska try to make it work, but it proves incompatible with Voyager, releasing anti-neutrinos that threaten the warp core, and Torres destroys it with a phaser. Janeway learns of Tuvok's part in the deal and confronts the officer she trusts most, and the two must deal with the breach in their relationship.
