During an ion storm Kirk jettisons a pod, and records officer Ben Finney, who was inside it, is presumed dead. At Starbase 11, Commodore Stone finds that the Enterprise's computer log contradicts Kirk's account, showing him ejecting the pod before declaring an emergency. Kirk refuses to step aside quietly and faces a court martial, prosecuted by his former girlfriend Areel Shaw and defended by the eccentric lawyer Samuel Cogley, who prefers books to computers. When Spock beats the ship's computer at chess, games it should always draw, he proves it has been tampered with. The court moves aboard the Enterprise, and a sensor sweep for heartbeats reveals that Finney is alive and hiding. Bitter that Kirk once reported an error of his, he faked his death and has sabotaged the ship. Kirk overpowers him, saves the Enterprise and is cleared.
- 01The first episode to use the terms “Starfleet” and “Starfleet Command”, and the first to show a starbase.
- 02Originally titled “Court Martial on Star Base 11”, it was meant as a cheap single-set episode but needed four new sets.
- 03The Starbase 11 matte painting was later reused as a magazine cover in “Far Beyond the Stars” on Deep Space Nine.
