The Enterprise scans a rogue comet that has travelled for some 87 million years, and something answers. Strange symbols and artefacts start appearing all over the ship, and Data sculpts masks bearing the same signs. At the comet's core lies an alien archive, a vast library of a lost civilisation, which is now rewriting the Enterprise into its own world. The ship itself begins to transform, and Data is taken over by a series of personalities from the culture's mythology, among them the trickster Ihat and an old man said to be the father of the sun goddess Masaka. Picard learns that Masaka is waking and that her temple is being built aboard the ship. When Data becomes Masaka, the archive cannot be shut down by force. Picard instead plays a part in the myth himself, donning the mask of the moon figure Korgano, her counterpart in the myth. Persuaded by him, she sleeps, and the ship returns to normal.

  1. 01Brent Spiner had very little time to prepare his many roles, and later joked that the result included some of the most preposterous acting ever seen.
  2. 02The script grew from Michael Piller's idea for a science-fiction take on the Library of Alexandria.
  3. 03The masks were designed as a cross between Venetian and Mayan styles.
