Sent to recover radioactive debris from a crashed probe on Barkon IV, Data is damaged and loses his memory. He wanders into a pre-industrial village carrying a case of the fragments. The magistrate Garvin and his daughter Gia take him in, and Gia names him Jayden. The villagers sell the shiny metal as jewellery and soon fall ill. Data works out that the fragments are to blame and makes a cure, but frightened villagers attack him, exposing the machinery under his skin. He still manages to put the remedy in the village well before he is struck down and buried. Riker and Crusher arrive to search for him and recover his body, and Data is restored aboard the Enterprise. Meanwhile Troi studies for the bridge officer's test but keeps failing an engineering simulation. She finally realises the test demands she order a colleague to his death to save the ship, and she passes, earning promotion to commander.
- 01Patrick Stewart barely appears because he was performing his one-man A Christmas Carol on stage in London during filming in December 1993.
- 02The story was pitched as “Data as Frankenstein”, inspired by the 1931 film rather than Mary Shelley's novel.
- 03The title comes from Polonius's advice in Hamlet: “to thine own self be true”.
