The Kes, one of two rival societies on the planet Kesprytt, have applied to join the Federation. When Picard and Dr Crusher beam down to talk, they are diverted into a cell run by the secretive Prytt, who implant devices in their necks. With a tricorder smuggled in by Kes agents, they escape through caves and head for the border. The implants link their minds, so each hears the other's thoughts, and moving apart makes them ill. Forced into total honesty, and with Beverly briefly recaptured, they uncover old secrets, including Picard's long-hidden feelings for Beverly, held back since her late husband Jack died. On the ship, Riker's careful diplomacy with both sides finally secures their release. Back aboard, the implants removed, Picard and Crusher share dinner and talk about where things might go, ending the evening with a kiss.
