Lwaxana Troi is teaching a telepathic species to speak, but she is not her usual flamboyant self, and her daughter senses something deeply wrong.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Lwaxana Troi comes aboard as a teacher to the Cairn, a telepathic people learning to use spoken language. Deanna notices her mother is unusually tired and withdrawn. After an odd moment with Hedril, a young Cairn girl, by a pool, Lwaxana collapses into a coma. Dr Crusher finds that her telepathic mind is breaking down under the strain of something buried. Through a telepathic link, Deanna enters her mother's mind. She battles mental defences that take the form of Picard, a pursuing wolf and the image of her late father. With Picard, Deanna finds that seven years of her mother's journal were erased around the time of her birth. At last the truth emerges: Deanna had an older sister, Kestra, who drowned as a child after chasing a puppy into the water. Facing the grief she hid for decades, Lwaxana recovers her happy memories of Kestra, and mother and daughter wake holding hands.
- 01Majel Barrett's final TNG appearance as Lwaxana, and the first time Deanna's father, Ian Andrew Troi, is seen.
- 02A young Kirsten Dunst plays Hedril, a year before her breakthrough in Interview with the Vampire.
