The Enterprise is docked at Deep Space 9, helping with repairs. Worf is approached by Jaglom Shrek, a Yridian information broker, who claims Worf's father Mogh survived the Khitomer massacre and is a prisoner of the Romulans. Meanwhile an experiment with Dr Bashir and an alien device sends a surge through Data, who finds himself in a vision of Dr Soong as a young man. Geordi and Bashir conclude that Soong built a dream programme into Data, and Data begins to explore it, turning to painting to understand what he saw. Worf, torn between doubt and duty, persuades Shrek to take him to the camp. He slips into the compound and is shocked to find Klingons living there apparently by choice. An elder, L'Kor, tells him Mogh died at Khitomer. When Worf tries to leave, Romulan guards stop him, and he finds he is now a prisoner too.
- 01Siddig El Fadil guest stars as Dr Bashir. The script originally called for Dax, but scheduling conflicts forced the change.
- 02The first appearance of the Yridians, who go on to appear in TNG and later series.
- 03Brent Spiner plays a young Dr Soong in Data's dream, having played the elderly Soong in “Brothers”.
