Returning from a visit to the planet Marlonia, Picard, Guinan, Ensign Ro and Keiko O'Brien are hit by a transporter malfunction that turns their bodies into those of 12-year-old children, though their minds remain adult. Picard hands command to Riker and struggles to be taken seriously. Keiko is hurt when Miles cannot cope with her new form, while Guinan coaxes Ro into enjoying the childhood she never had. Before a cure can be found, Ferengi in old Klingon warships attack and seize the Enterprise, beaming most of the adults down to a planet and putting the children in the schoolroom. Picard plays a sulky child demanding his father, so the Ferengi bring Riker, who uses nonsense instructions to unlock the computer. With Alexander's help, the children use the transporters and their wits to trap the intruders and retake the ship. Picard, Guinan and Keiko are restored, while Ro enjoys a little longer as a child.
