Amanda Rogers, a gifted student, comes aboard the Enterprise as an intern. When she uses impossible powers without understanding them, Q appears and reveals the truth: her parents were members of the Q Continuum who chose to live as humans on Earth. Q has been sent to decide whether Amanda is truly Q, and he hints that a mere hybrid might have to be destroyed. Picard angrily opposes Q's tests, while Amanda is torn between excitement at her powers and fear of losing her human life. Investigating her past, the crew learn that her parents died in an impossible tornado, and Q admits the Continuum killed them because they would not stop using their powers. Amanda is told she may stay human only if she never uses them. When she saves a planet whose atmosphere is failing, she accepts she cannot deny her nature and leaves to join the Continuum.
