Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
The Enterprise answers a distress call from a damaged Romulan ship. Geordi and Ro are beaming back from it when a transporter malfunction appears to kill them. In fact they have been shifted out of phase by an experimental Romulan cloaking device: they can see and hear the crew and pass through walls, but no one can see or hear them. Ro believes they are dead, while Geordi insists there must be a scientific explanation. They discover that the Romulans are planning to destroy the Enterprise with a signal that will breach its warp core, and they are hunted by Parem, a Romulan who is also out of phase. Cornered, Geordi forces Parem through the hull into space. At their own memorial service, Geordi and Ro fire a Romulan disruptor to create a burst of chronitons, which Data notices. He uses anyon particles to bring them back into phase, and Geordi warns engineering just in time.
- 01Intended as a budget-saving bottle show, it became one of the season's most expensive episodes because of the phasing effects.
- 02The story was first developed with Troi, rather than Ro, alongside Geordi.
- 03Nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Drama Series.
