The Enterprise finds a crashed Borg scout ship with a single injured survivor. Crusher insists on treating him. Picard, still haunted by his own assimilation, sees an opportunity: Geordi and Data devise a plan to send the drone home carrying an impossible geometric shape that would cripple the Collective. Geordi befriends the drone, who calls himself Third of Five. Geordi names him Hugh, and Hugh begins to show curiosity, loneliness and a growing sense of self. Guinan, whose people were devastated by the Borg, is hostile until she too sees Hugh as an individual. When Picard confronts the drone, he is shaken to hear him speak of himself as “I”. Picard abandons the plan and offers Hugh asylum, but Hugh chooses to go back so that the Borg will not hunt the Enterprise for him. Geordi watches as the Borg collect him, and Hugh glances back at his friend before he vanishes.
