Worf now fights for Gowron alongside his brother Kurn, but the civil war is going badly as the Duras forces gain ground. Picard is convinced that the Romulans are secretly supplying the Duras sisters, and he assembles a Starfleet armada along the border, linking the ships in a tachyon detection net that can reveal cloaked vessels. Data is given command of the USS Sutherland, where he faces the open scepticism of his first officer, Hobson. The Romulan commander Sela reveals that she is the daughter of Tasha Yar, the officer who went back in time aboard the Enterprise-C. Worf is captured by the Duras sisters but refuses to join them. When the Romulans open a hole in the net, Data disobeys an order to rejoin the fleet and fires torpedoes that expose the cloaked convoy. The Romulans withdraw, the Duras forces collapse, and Worf captures Toral but spares his life. He then returns to Starfleet.
- 01Sela grew out of Denise Crosby's own suggestion to explore a possible child arising from the events of “Yesterday's Enterprise”.
- 02The USS Sutherland takes its name from a ship in C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower novels, a key influence on Gene Roddenberry.
- 03The solar flare effect was created with dried oatmeal on a vibrating light table.
