Searching for the missing USS Brattain, the Enterprise finds it adrift in a binary star system. Its crew have killed one another, and the only survivor, the Betazoid Andrus Hagan, is in shock. Soon the Enterprise cannot move either. Worse, Dr Crusher finds that the crew can no longer dream. As the days pass everyone becomes paranoid, irritable and haunted by hallucinations, while Troi, the one person who can still dream, suffers recurring nightmares of floating towards a voice. Data, unaffected, takes command as the crew falls apart. Troi finally realises the dreams are a message from aliens trapped on the other side of the rift: they need hydrogen, the meaning of their cryptic phrase. Troi makes contact in a dream, Data releases the gas, and the blast frees both ships.
