Data narrates a full day aboard ship in a letter to Commander Bruce Maddox, who is still studying him. Data is due to give away the bride at the wedding of Miles O'Brien and Keiko Ishikawa, but Keiko calls the whole thing off and Data cannot work out why. He studies human behaviour, consults Troi and Geordi, and asks Dr Crusher to teach him to dance so he can play his part. At the same time the Enterprise carries the Vulcan ambassador T'Pel to a secret meeting with the Romulans in the Neutral Zone. She appears to die in a transporter accident, but Data's analysis proves the accident was staged and T'Pel was a Romulan spy, beamed to the Romulan ship. Picard backs down rather than start a war. Keiko and Miles marry after all, and Data ends his report a little wiser.
- 01The first appearance of Data's cat, later named Spot.
- 02Gates McFadden, a trained dancer and choreographer, did her own dancing. A body double performed most of Brent Spiner's footwork.
- 03Picard's words at the wedding closely echo those Kirk spoke at the wedding in the original series' “Balance of Terror”.
