At Starbase 133, Dr Crusher welcomes her old mentor Dr Dalen Quaice aboard, then stops by Engineering, where Wesley is experimenting with a static warp bubble. Soon afterwards Quaice disappears, and no one but Beverly remembers him. Her medical staff follow, then more and more of the crew, until only she and Picard are left on an empty ship. Beverly insists her memories are real. In fact Wesley's experiment has trapped her inside a warp bubble shaped by her own thoughts, and that bubble is now shrinking. The Traveler returns to help Wesley open a doorway back. When the universe itself begins to collapse, Beverly works out that she must head for the centre of the bubble in Engineering, and leaps through the vortex to rejoin her son and crewmates in the real Enterprise.
