A prank between two young brothers leaves the younger, Willie, infected by a dangerous parasite, and the Enterprise races to a starbase for treatment. Without warning, Data takes over the ship, mimicking Picard's voice and locking the crew out of every system. He beams down to Terlina III, where he finds his creator, Dr Noonien Soong, alive but dying. Soong has summoned Data to give him a chip that would let him feel emotions. But the homing signal has also brought Lore, Data's unstable older brother. Lore disables Data and tricks his way into receiving the chip, mortally wounds Soong and escapes. The crew finally regain control, reactivate Data, and Soong dies. The boy reaches the starbase in time, and Data watches the two brothers make up, thinking about his own.
