The Enterprise is undergoing repairs at Earth Station McKinley after the Borg attack. Picard takes leave at his family home in La Barre, France, where his older brother Robert runs the vineyard with his wife Marie and their son René, who dreams of the stars. Old resentments surface quickly, and Picard toys with leaving Starfleet to join an ocean project on Earth. Aboard ship, Worf is embarrassed by a visit from his human adoptive parents, Sergey and Helena Rozhenko, until he understands how much they love him. Beverly gives Wesley a recorded message his late father Jack made when Wesley was a baby. Robert finally provokes a fight in the vineyard mud, and Picard breaks down, admitting his horror at what the Borg made him do. Reconciled, he returns to the Enterprise, and René looks up at the night sky.
