With the Borg threat in mind, Starfleet orders a war game: Riker and a skeleton crew aboard an ageing starship against Picard and the Enterprise.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Starfleet orders a combat exercise to test the Enterprise's readiness, overseen by the arrogant Zakdorn strategist Sirna Kolrami. Riker takes command of the USS Hathaway, an elderly ship, with a small crew including Worf, La Forge and Wesley, to face Picard. Data, serving as Picard's first officer, loses a game of Strategema to Kolrami and begins to doubt himself, until Picard reminds him that it is possible to make no mistakes and still lose. Wesley quietly obtains a little antimatter to give the Hathaway a brief burst of warp, and Worf fools the Enterprise's sensors with a decoy. Then a real Ferengi warship appears, disables the Enterprise's weapons and demands the Hathaway. Picard fires torpedoes at the Hathaway just as it warps away, convincing the Ferengi their prize has been destroyed. Data later challenges Kolrami to a rematch and frustrates him by playing for a stalemate.
- 01The war game is ordered as preparation for the Borg, following their debut in “Q Who”.
- 02The Hathaway is a Constellation-class ship, using effects footage of the class first seen in “The Battle”.
- 03Writer David Kemper later became a co-executive producer on Farscape.
