Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
While preparing for delicate first contact with the insect-like Jarada, who demand a flawless greeting in their language, Picard relaxes in the holodeck as Dixon Hill, a private eye in 1941 San Francisco. He brings Dr Crusher, historian Dr Whalen and an eager Data along. A Jaradan scan damages the holodeck, locking the doors and disabling the safety controls, so that the fictional bullets are now real. When gangster Cyrus Redblock and his henchman Felix Leech come looking for a mysterious object they believe Hill has, Whalen is shot and seriously wounded. Outside, Wesley and Geordi work to fix the problem as the Jarada's deadline nears. When the doors finally open, Redblock and Leech step through to the ship and vanish. Picard races to the bridge and delivers the greeting perfectly, and talks with the Jarada begin.
- 01Won a Peabody Award, and William Ware Theiss won the Emmy for Outstanding Costumes for a Series. The Peabody citation praised a new standard of quality for first-run syndication.
- 02The first Star Trek episode built around the holodeck.
- 03Dixon Hill was first named Dixon Steele after the noir film In a Lonely Place, but the name was changed because it sounded too like Remington Steele.
