At the planet Haven, Deanna Troi learns that the time has come for the marriage arranged for her in childhood, to Wyatt Miller, the son of old family friends. Her mother, Lwaxana Troi, beams aboard with her silent valet Mr Homn, and the Betazoid and human families soon clash over wedding customs. Deanna and Wyatt try to make the match work, while Riker struggles with his feelings for her. Wyatt admits he has long dreamed of a different woman. Meanwhile, a ship of Tarellians, a people thought wiped out by a deadly plague, approaches Haven, and Picard holds it in a tractor beam to protect the planet. Aboard is Ariana, the woman from Wyatt's dreams. Wyatt, a doctor, beams over to join her, knowing he can never return, and pledges to help seek a cure. The Tarellians agree to leave Haven, and the wedding is off.
