The Ferengi DaiMon Bok requests a meeting with Picard, who has been troubled by severe headaches. Bok presents a gift for the “hero of Maxia”: the derelict Stargazer, the ship Picard commanded nine years earlier. At Maxia, Picard destroyed an unknown attacker using a short warp jump that made the Stargazer appear in two places at once, a tactic later named the Picard Manoeuvre. That attacker was a Ferengi ship commanded by Bok's son. Aboard the Stargazer, Data finds a log entry claiming Picard fired under a flag of truce, but it proves to be a forgery. Bok is using a hidden mind-control sphere to make Picard relive the battle, with the Enterprise cast as the enemy. Picard takes the Stargazer's helm and prepares to fire. Riker talks him through it, Picard destroys the sphere, and Bok is relieved of command by his own crew for an unprofitable venture.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01The first time the series mentioned on air that Picard had previously commanded a starship.
  2. 02The Stargazer was based on a design seen as a model in Picard's ready room in the pilot. Rick Sternbach kitbashed the study model; Greg Jein built the four-foot filming model.
  3. 03“Picard Manoeuvre” later became an informal behind-the-scenes term for Patrick Stewart's habit of tugging his uniform top down.
