Starfleet propulsion expert Kosinski joins the Enterprise to test his engine modifications, bringing a quiet alien assistant from Tau Alpha C. During the first test the ship leaps 2.7 million light-years to the galaxy M33, and Wesley notices that the assistant seems to be the real cause. A second attempt sends the Enterprise even further, to a place near the edge of the universe where thought becomes reality: crew members see their pasts and wishes take shape, and Picard meets his long-dead mother. Picard learns that the alien, a Traveler, can channel thought into reality and has been exploring through Kosinski's experiments. He tells Picard that Wesley is a prodigy whose talent should be nurtured. Exhausted, the Traveler works with Wesley and a crew focusing its thoughts to bring the ship home, then fades away. Picard makes Wesley an acting ensign.
