Frightened by a lightning storm, young Michael Burnham cannot sleep, so her father Mike tells her a story. Long ago in Africa, the First People had no light at night and feared a beast that hunted in the dark. Their land was worn out and food was running short, yet no one dared cross the mountains. One girl wanted to explore, but the Elder dismissed her. Guided by a firefly, she followed a streak of light across the sky and found an alien craft. Its occupant saw her courage, taught her that conquering fear comes first, and gave her a gift. Back home, she released it into the sky, filling the night with stars. Her people lost their fear of the dark, and she grew up to be an explorer and a queen. Comforted, Michael gives up her nightlight.
