A soldier from a war against the V'draysh wakes in an empty sickbay after his escape pod is taken aboard a drifting starship. The ship is the USS Discovery, which has held position for around a thousand years since its crew left, and its computer has grown into a sentient being called Zora. She nurses the man she calls Craft back to health, but he longs to return to his family on Alcor IV, and Zora's orders and the ship's single shuttle stand in the way. They grow close, watching her favourite film, Funny Face, and Zora creates a hologram of herself so they can dance. Thinking of his family, Craft gently pulls away. In the end Zora lets him go, preparing the shuttle, which she names Funny Face, and sending him home while she remains alone.

  1. 01Written by novelist Michael Chabon, who went on to become showrunner of Star Trek: Picard.
  2. 02The title comes from Homer's Odyssey, in which the nymph Calypso keeps a shipwrecked sailor with her. The name Craft nods to “crafty” Odysseus.
  3. 03Discovery's third season later jumped the series to the 32nd century, and in season four the ship's computer began to emerge as Zora.
