Starfleet counsellor Dr Aspen joins the Enterprise to help colonies raided by pirates beyond Federation space, where the ship cannot easily contact Starfleet. Answering a distress call, Pike leads a boarding party to the pirate ship Serene Squall, but the pirates take the Enterprise and Pike's team are left as prisoners. Pike plays on the pirates' grievances and stirs up a mutiny that lets his team seize the Serene Squall. Aspen then reveals they are Angel, the pirates' captain, and demands the release of a Vulcan prisoner whom T'Pring has been trying to rehabilitate, threatening Spock otherwise. T'Pring is ready to agree, but Spock stops her by breaking off their engagement and claiming an affair with Chapel. Pike uses remote command codes to lock down the Enterprise, Angel escapes and the remaining pirates surrender. Spock reassures T'Pring, tells Chapel they are only friends, and reveals that Angel's Vulcan lover is his half-brother, Sybok.
