Vance and Thok reveal that Braka has gathered a cartel of worlds outside the Federation, and that his Omega mine wall threatens billions of lives. Only the Athena, crewed by Ake, Reno, the Doctor and the cadets, is outside it. Braka boards and captures Ake and Anisha. The Doctor projects an illusion of the ship's destruction but is left glitching and speaking gibberish. Reno takes command, and the cadets work out that the Doctor's garbled words point to a solution involving rubin particles. Braka puts the Federation on trial in a televised spectacle, with Anisha as judge. Caleb arrives to plead Starfleet's case, and Ake reveals that Braka's home colony was destroyed not by the Federation but by his own father's weapons work. His allies desert him. SAM neutralises the mines, the fleet arrives and Braka is arrested. At Betazed the year-end celebrations resume, and Caleb plans a summer visit to Earth with his mother.
