As the cadets celebrate the end of the academic year, Jay-Den leads a Klingon bonding ritual declaring the friends a chosen family, but Caleb holds back. Starfleet learns Nus Braka has weaponised the Omega molecule. With SAM's help recalling a childhood code, Caleb unlocks messages from his mother Anisha and learns she is on Ukeck, a world outside the Federation. Caleb, SAM, Darem and Genesis take a shuttle there without permission, and Ake breaks protocol to follow in the Athena with Reno and the Doctor, while Jay-Den and Tarima stow away. Reunited with Anisha, Caleb decides to stay with her, but when the Venari Ral annex Ukeck and capture his friends, he goes back to help. Anisha is shot during the rescue. The Athena escapes, separating its saucer to shake off pursuers, only to find that Braka has sealed off Federation space with Omega mines. Stranded outside, Reno sends a distress call.
