Last Flight of the Protostar, Part II

Chakotay reveals that the Protostar cannot fly until it collects deuterium from a maelstrom on the far side of Ysida's vapour ocean, so the crew turns the starship into a makeshift sailing vessel. During the crossing Dal clashes with Chakotay, then admits he has been doubting his purpose since glimpsing his own future in Wesley's machine. Chakotay shares how he felt at Dal's age, when he joined the Maquis, and later Dal saves the captain after he falls into the ocean. On Voyager, Admiral Janeway is having second thoughts about trusting the future to the cadets, until Noum puts her in touch with Dr Beverly Crusher, who has faith in her son. The crew finally gathers the deuterium, restoring the impulse engines and warp drive, and the Protostar leaves Ysida. But Voyager is 3,000 light years away, and a new proto-core must be built before the two ships can meet.
