Picard dreams of playing poker with Data aboard the Enterprise-D. Now retired to Château Picard, he gives a rare television interview, angrily explaining that he resigned when Starfleet abandoned its rescue of the Romulans from a supernova after rogue synthetics attacked Mars, an attack that led the Federation to ban synthetic life. Elsewhere, a young woman named Dahj is attacked by assassins and discovers she can fight with startling skill. Guided by visions of Picard, she seeks him out. At the Starfleet Archives he notices that she resembles a painting Data once made, titled “Daughter”. When more attackers strike, Dahj is killed. Dr Agnes Jurati of the Daystrom Institute tells Picard that Dahj was almost certainly an android, and that androids of her kind are made in pairs. The episode ends with Dahj's twin, Soji, at work aboard a disabled Borg cube now under Romulan control.
