Mariner, Tendi and T'Lyn go undercover on a pre-industrial world to recover something from another universe, but extreme time dilation turns a quick mission into a very long stay.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Another fissure has dropped alternate-universe technology on Dilmer III, a pre-industrial planet where time runs far faster than it does in orbit. Mariner, Tendi and T'Lyn beam down in disguise to retrieve it, but Boimler and Rutherford spill drinks over the transporter controls, and while seconds pass on the ship, the away team is stranded for around ten months. The technology proves to be the severed head of Data, from a universe where the Enterprise-D was never destroyed, and the trio must hide him while keeping the Prime Directive intact. Mariner lands in jail after accidentally putting out the locals' eternal flame, and makes friends there. Tendi and T'Lyn, both up for the senior science officer post, compete relentlessly, inventing and innovating their way through local life. Once they are rescued, Data heads home through the rift, but first recommends both officers for the job. Tendi and T'Lyn become joint senior science officers.
- 01Brent Spiner voices an alternate Data whose Enterprise-D survived, unlike the ship destroyed in “Star Trek Generations”.
- 02The title puns on time dilation and on the dilation that accompanies childbirth.
- 03This Data recalls being rescued from 19th-century San Francisco, a nod to TNG's “Time's Arrow” two-parter.
