The Cerritos is hosting peace talks between the Orbs and the Cubes, photonic beings whose quarrel comes down to their opposing shapes. Into this arrives Ensign Olly, a walking disaster on her last chance, whom Mariner sees as a kindred spirit. Olly turns out to be a descendant of Zeus, hiding lightning powers she wants nothing to do with. When delegates go missing, suspicion falls on Olly, but she and Mariner discover that a young Cube and a young Orb ran off together and now have a child. When the talks collapse into fighting, Olly's powers and engineering know-how help save the ship, and the couple's offspring inspires both sides to make peace. Olly gets the engineering posting she wanted, plus a night in the brig for hiding evidence. Meanwhile Boimler's attempts to befriend Dr T'Ana pay off after a lightning bolt sends him to sickbay, earning him a nickname and a place in her book club.

DID YOU KNOW?

01Olly's ancestry ties back to TOS “Who Mourns for Adonais?”, which established that the Greek gods were aliens who once visited Earth.
02To avoid offending the Cubes, round objects are cleared away, among them a dabo wheel, a 23rd-century Romulan cloaking device and a chair from Worf's quarters.
03Reviewers noted a precedent in Peter David's “New Frontier” novels, in which Mark McHenry is descended from Apollo and Carolyn Palamas.
