Stripped of command after a mutiny, Ma'ah is living quietly on Qo'noS with his brother Malor. Mariner and Boimler, there because of a quantum fissure in Klingon space, help him seek reinstatement through an ancient ritual overseen by the councillor Bargh, brother of a captain Ma'ah once killed. The group endures painstiks and wrestles a giant targ, but when the final test demands a sacrifice, a weary Ma'ah volunteers himself. Rallied by his friends, he instead forces Bargh into the trial. Ma'ah wins and is reinstated, Bargh stabs him in the back, and Ma'ah, saved by his spare organs, kills him. Mariner reveals that getting round Bargh was also her route to scanning the fissure. Aboard the Cerritos, two Klowahkan critics reject everything Dr Migleemo cooks and have him arrested, until Tendi and Rutherford prove the pair lost their sense of taste long ago. Mariner's scans reveal the fissures are artificial: someone is making them.
