Queen Paolana of Hysperia, a planet styled like a Renaissance fair, asks for help with her ship's engines, but her real aim is to bring her son, Chief Engineer Billups, home. Billups gave up his claim to the throne to join Starfleet, and tradition says he must take it if he loses his virginity, so his mother keeps scheming to make that happen. Rutherford helps with the engines, and when an accident appears to kill the queen, a grieving Billups prepares for the royal ceremony, until Rutherford exposes the deception just in time and Billups stays aboard. Boimler, pulled from an exciting mission, joins Mariner in transporting the evil computer AGIMUS to the Daystrom Institute. Their shuttle crashes on a desert planet, and AGIMUS tries to divide them by revealing that Mariner had Boimler reassigned because she doubted him. Boimler tricks the computer into powering a distress signal, Mariner apologises, and AGIMUS ends up locked away with other rogue computers.
