Rutherford's transporter upgrade test goes wrong and leaves Boimler permanently out of phase. He is shipped off to Division 14's medical ship, the USS Osler, alongside the strange dog Tendi has genetically engineered, and both are told they are bound for “The Farm”. With Freeman and the senior staff away on a covert mission, Mariner's Academy friend Captain Amina Ramsey takes temporary command of the Cerritos and makes Mariner her acting first officer. Mariner, wary of being offered a real promotion, quietly sabotages away missions. When the USS Rubidoux is attacked by a giant space-dwelling lifeform, Mariner and Ramsey finally work as a team and use Rutherford's transporter to rescue the crew. Ramsey accepts that Mariner wants to stay an ensign. The Farm turns out to be a genuine place of healing: Boimler is cured and sent home, while the dog chooses to stay.
