Boimler is thrilled to be given a shuttle run taking Klingon General K'orin to the Federation embassy on Tulgana IV, until Mariner talks her way on board. She and K'orin turn out to be old friends, and the two drink their way through the flight. After landing, a drunken K'orin steals the shuttle, and the ensigns are stranded in a rough part of the planet. Mariner breezes through every strange encounter while Boimler, for all his studying, gets everything wrong, until he takes off his combadge and talks about quitting Starfleet. Then a Ferengi offers to help, Boimler rightly suspects a con, and he scares the would-be mugger off. They find K'orin and deliver him safely. Later, Mariner privately reveals she set up the Ferengi encounter to restore Boimler's confidence. Meanwhile, Rutherford tries command, medical and security before realising he belongs in engineering, where Tendi joins him to watch a pulsar.
