New ensign Tendi joins the USS Cerritos, one of Starfleet's least glamorous ships, just as a routine second contact mission brings an alien infection aboard. Meanwhile, Boimler is secretly asked to keep an eye on rule-breaker Mariner.

Eager young Orion medic D'Vana Tendi arrives on the Cerritos and is shown around by ensigns Brad Boimler, a by-the-book worrier, and Beckett Mariner, a talented but rebellious officer. Captain Freeman quietly asks Boimler to report on Mariner's rule-breaking. On an away mission, Boimler catches Mariner handing Starfleet equipment to local farmers, and the pair are attacked by a farm animal that leaves Boimler drenched in slime. Back aboard, Commander Ransom turns out to have carried an alien virus up from the planet, and infected crew members start rampaging through the ship. Engineer Sam Rutherford's date with Ensign Barnes becomes a fight for survival. Dr T'Ana discovers that Boimler's slime is the cure, and the outbreak ends with the senior staff taking the credit. Boimler decides not to report Mariner, she offers to mentor him, and a final scene reveals that Mariner is Captain Freeman's daughter.
