With little more than a day before the anomaly reaches Earth and Ni'Var, Burnham decides to investigate a dead planet near the hyperfield that may be the 10-C's original home. General Ndoye of United Earth thinks it a waste of time, but the other diplomats agree, provided it yields useful information. Burnham, Saru, Culber and Detmer find the huge skeletons of creatures that once lived in the planet's long-gone gas layers, and begin experiencing powerful hallucinations of fear and joy. They deduce that the 10-C fled after meteor strikes burned away the gas, and that the species communicates emotion through complex hydrocarbons, which could help the crew talk to them. Meanwhile Book and Tarka secretly follow Discovery and sneak aboard. Tarka hides their ship from Zora's sensors so it can cling to Discovery's hull, taking engineer Jett Reno hostage in the process. Book then persuades Ndoye to help them destroy the anomaly.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01The title nods to the Rosetta Stone, which made it possible to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs, as the hydrocarbons offer a key to 10-C communication.
  2. 02The planet's star is surrounded by Dyson rings, recalling the Dyson sphere where Scotty was found in The Next Generation's “Relics”.
  3. 03Burnham says Saru now speaks more than 100 languages, up from the 90-plus he claimed in “New Eden”.
