Former Discovery security chief Nhan is assigned to the ship to make sure Burnham's feelings for Book do not get in the way of stopping him and Tarka. Following Burnham's tracker, Discovery jumps close to Book's ship, where the weapon is now complete. Saru leads a cloaked shuttle to board it and disable the device, but Tarka's new automated defences attack. Book helps Saru's team escape, then finds and disables the tracker and jumps into the anomaly, with Discovery in pursuit. Inside, both ships reach the controller at its heart. Nhan prepares to order Book's ship destroyed, but Burnham talks both Nhan and Book into standing down, hoping to give the diplomats time. Behind Book's back, Tarka fires the weapon anyway. The controller and the anomaly are destroyed, but the power source Tarka expected is not there. Book and Tarka escape, and soon afterwards a new anomaly appears in the same place.
