Tarka needs isolynium to finish his weapon, and Burnham knows which black-market dealer Book will turn to. President Rillak refuses to let her pursue him, and Admiral Vance agrees in public, but privately orders Burnham to find charts of Species 10-C's location and, if she can, get the isolynium first. At Haz Mazaro's casino on Porathia, Mazaro agrees to sell the isolynium to Book and Tarka if Book can catch a cheat working the tables. Burnham and Owosekun arrive soon after and buy the charts, but cannot outbid their rivals, so Owosekun enters the fighting ring to raise more money. With both parties holding equal offers, Mazaro settles the matter with a card game. Book wins the isolynium, but not before Burnham hides a tracker on it. Back aboard Discovery, the charts reveal a vast artificial hyperfield beyond the galactic barrier, apparently powered by boronite that the anomaly mines from planets.

01Writer Sean Cochran drew on his father's knowledge as a gambling expert, along with a hired consultant, to get the casino details right.
02The props team played through every card game before filming, working backwards from the desired results so the actors could play the cards in the right order.
03The casino set was a redress of the space station set from the season's first episode.
