Sisko is given a new Defiant-class ship, the São Paulo, along with permission to rename it Defiant. On Cardassia, the Dominion wipes out Damar's resistance after a betrayal, and Kira, Garak and Damar barely escape. They hide in the home where Garak grew up, sheltered by Mila, his late father's housekeeper. The Dominion announces that Damar is dead, but Kira sees an opportunity: a living legend could turn a defeated rebel army into a popular uprising. Damar reveals he is alive and calls on ordinary Cardassians to resist. On the station, Grand Nagus Zek arrives to name his successor, and Quark assumes it will be him. Instead Zek picks Rom, leaving Quark horrified by the progressive reforms remaking Ferenginar. Bashir and Ezri begin a relationship. As Sisko prepares for a major offensive, Kasidy tells him she is pregnant, and he remembers the Prophets' warning.
- 01The title comes from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, the same passage General Chang quotes in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
- 02Jeffrey Combs plays two roles here, the Vorta Weyoun and the Ferengi Brunt, in separate scenes.
- 03The new Defiant's original name, São Paulo, nods to the gunboat San Pablo in the film The Sand Pebbles, and Sisko's greeting echoes Steve McQueen's line.
