Worf and Ezri return with news of the Breen alliance, just as the Breen launch a surprise attack on Earth, damaging Starfleet Headquarters. On Cardassia, Damar grows bitter that his people have become an occupied power rather than partners in conquest. On Bajor, Winn's aide Solbor uncovers the truth about Anjohl. Winn learns he is Dukat but stays at his side, and when Solbor threatens to expose them, she kills him. His blood falls on the Book of the Kosst Amojan and reveals its hidden text. The allies launch an assault on the Chin'toka system, but the Breen unleash an energy-dampening weapon that leaves ships helpless. The Defiant is destroyed, along with many Federation, Klingon and Romulan vessels, in a crushing defeat. As the episode ends, Damar sends a message to his fellow Cardassians, calling on them to rise up against the Dominion.
- 01The Breen attack on Earth, which damages Starfleet Headquarters and the Golden Gate Bridge, was dramatised in Dave Galanter's short story “Eleven Hours Out”.
- 02John Vickery debuts as Rusot, a Cardassian officer unhappy with the Dominion alliance. He also appeared in TNG's “Night Terrors” and later in Enterprise's “Judgment”.
- 03Chin'toka was first taken by the allies in “Tears of the Prophets” and is their only foothold in Dominion space.
