When a young officer is shot dead with an experimental rifle, Ezri turns to a dangerous ally to catch the killer: the memories of Joran, the murderer among Dax's former hosts.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Lt Ilario, a cheerful young officer, is found dead in his quarters, killed by a bullet from a TR-116, a prototype rifle. When a second officer dies the same way, the investigation reveals that the weapon has been fitted with a miniature transporter, letting the killer shoot through walls from a distance. Ezri, the station's counsellor, undergoes a Trill rite that brings Joran, the murderous former host of the Dax symbiont, back to the surface so she can think like the killer. Joran's presence unsettles her, but his insight helps. Ezri notices the victims were all smiling in their photographs, and the trail leads to Chu'lak, a Vulcan survivor of the lost USS Grissom whose suppressed trauma has turned deadly. In a tense confrontation, with Joran urging her to kill, Ezri shoots Chu'lak in the shoulder instead. Afterwards she accepts that Joran is part of her and cannot simply be buried again.
- 01Robert Hewitt Wolfe, a former staff writer, wrote it freelance while developing Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, because half the writing staff were busy reworking “Prodigal Daughter”.
- 02Leigh J. McCloskey reprises Joran, the role he took over in “Facets” from Jeff Magnus McBride.
- 03The murder weapon, a TR-116, fires a tritanium bullet. The killer's rifle carries a miniature transporter, so the shot leaves no powder burns.
